Stella

Stella was so relieved when Even returned to the hotel that she momentarily forgot about everything else. She was just glad he was safe and that he’d come back so that they could talk. Untangling herself from Even, Stella stepped back to allow him to enter the room properly and caught sight of the takeout bag in his hand.

“What’s all this?” she asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I brought breakfast. My attempt at a peace offering,” he said with a coy smile.

Stella stepped aside to reveal the coffee table, where her offerings waited. “Great minds, eh?”

Even laughed and moved in closer. “So this is what smelled so good. What is it?”

“Grillades and Grits,” Stella said and then explained what the meal was. “It’s probably a little cold now, so I’ll just pop these in the microwave.”

Once the food was re-warmed, Stella and Even sat on the couch together to eat. For a time, there was only the sound of munching as they devoured the food. Even ate the Grillades and Grits and both of his beignets, then downed both his cups of coffee. Stella ate almost as much but put one of her beignets aside for later before she turned to Even.

“I’m sorry I walked out on you,” she said, bowing her head.

“I’m sorry I acted so recklessly at the swamp yesterday,” he said, equally as ashamed. “I didn’t realize transitioning into a couple would be so challenging, but I should have realized it. If our line of work is going to put our lives on the line, we both need to be able to trust the other. You need to know, regardless of if you’re around or not, that I’m not going to do anything stupid that could get me killed.”

“Thank you for saying that, Ev. That’s all I want. I just need to know that you’re safe. I know being part of the SPA will always come with risks, and that’s fine because that’s the life we both signed up for. But we don’t need to make the danger worse by going off half-cocked.”

“Yeah, you’re right. I need to learn to slow down and think more. We’re lucky we escaped the dragon, especially after what I’ve learned since.”

Stella’s eyes widened. “What have you learned? No, wait, I owe you an apology of my own. What you did was dumb, and it scared me, but I should have spoken to you about it instead of getting angry and just walking out.”

Even bowed his head. “I think we both have a thing or two to learn about communication. We have to promise to do better. For our work together and for our relationship.”

Stella shuffled closer to Even and pressed her lips to his. “I agree. Communication is the key. Now, tell me, where have you been, and what have you uncovered?”

Stella was quietly amazed when Even confessed that he’d not only called David and talked things through with his mentor, but he had then taken it upon himself to go to the library and research what they might be facing.
